Modifying parent and family interventions to better fit a specific community’s culture, needs, and preferences can have multiple benefits. Modification by adaptation or tailoring can improve family engagement, completion, and satisfaction. Additionally, modifications can improve feasibility and effectiveness. Modifications include aligning with inclusive language, cultural practices, and community contexts.

Panelists will discuss a variety of modifications used for different evidence-based parenting interventions across different populations. Initial discussions will focus on what populations have been served through cultural adaptation and tailoring, and different methods used to identify community needs and preferences or the rationale for adaptation. Panelists will discuss what specific content, format, approach, or language was adapted; and community response to the adaptations. Panelists will also discuss barriers and facilitators to adaptations and implementation; and lessons learned. Panelists will discuss their contributions and current best practices gleaned through research and clinical practice for adaptations to CBT and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Parent Child Interaction Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT), Helping the Noncompliant Child (HNC), and Generation PMTO. Finally, we will describe some of the challenges and best practices in conducting research, constructing program evaluations, and data gathering in adapted interventions.

At the end of this session, the learner will be able to:
  1. Describe different adaptations for evidence-based parent and family cognitive-behavioral interventions in research and clinical practice.
