Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) are the fastest growing population in the US, with over 88% growth over the past 20 years (Pew Research Center, 2021). It is well-documented that this group also experiences significant disparities in accessing mental health services, demonstrating some of the highest rates of underutilization across all ethnic and racial groups (SAMHSA, 2020). Serious mental illness (SMI) adds another, complicated layer to already marginalized AAPI communities. Those requiring inpatient hospitalization face multiple barriers to effective treatments, given the short length of stay with the main goal of stabilization of symptoms. With any minoritized population, cultural factors can impact the effective communication of individuals’ own experiences and symptom presentation, and within AAPI beliefs and value systems, issues such as stigma, acculturation, and limited mental health literacy may further impact treatment. Thus, it is crucial for the interdisciplinary hospital team to better conceptualize and tailor individualized treatments for AAPIs with SMI in acute distress. The goals of this clinical roundtable are to describe cultural factors impacting case conceptualization for inclusive affirming therapies and to discuss cultural adaptations for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in the inpatient context. Considerations for supervision of brief psychotherapy for AAPIs with SMI will also be discussed. Several case examples will be used to illustrate strategies to adapt CBT interventions to AAPIs with SMI in the inpatient setting. Finally, while this model is designed for AAPI populations, we will frame it as a broader concept that can be utilized for other cultural and ethnic minority populations, thereby emphasizing that inpatient units across the country may utilize this concept for treatment of their diverse populations in various settings.
