Abstract Body
Although a robust literature documents the association between intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and alcohol use, much of this evidence comes from studies that utilize cross-sectional and retrospective designs. A relative dearth of research has examined the within-day associations between experiences of IPV and alcohol use. Therefore, the present study examined the within-day concordance between IPV and alcohol use using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), a methodology that captures real-time, in-the-moment data to reduce recall bias and increase ecological validity. Participants were 145 community women experiencing IPV and using substances (Mage = 40.56, 59.7% Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) who completed surveys that assessed IPV and alcohol use three times a day for 30 days. During the reporting period, there were 2,946 instances of psychological IPV; 1,491 instances of physical IPV; and 874 instances of sexual IPV. One hundred and thirty-five (93.1%) women reported at least one instance of psychological IPV, 126 (86.9%) reported at least one instance of physical IPV, and 103 (71.4%) reported at least one instance of sexual IPV. Alcohol use was reported in 40.2% of assessments in which any form of IPV occurred. Specifically, alcohol use co-occurred with psychological IPV in 40.9% of assessments, with physical IPV in 47.9% of assessments, and with sexual IPV in 58.8% of assessments. Strengths of the EMA approach include the ability to capture real-time associations between IPV and alcohol use, minimizing recall bias and providing a nuanced understanding of the within-day dynamics between these variables. Furthermore, repeated assessments allow for the examination of variations across different days and contexts, enhancing the ecological validity of the findings. However, the EMA methodology also has notable limitations, such as the reliance on participant adherence to the assessment protocol and focus on self-reported data, which could introduce social desirability bias or inaccuracies in reporting. Despite these limitations, the findings highlight the need for preventative interventions that target the co-occurrence of IPV and alcohol use among women experiencing IPV.
